All Pumped Up

I’ve graduated up from the world of insulin-filled syringes to an insulin-filled pump.  After reading about it for a while, I’ve made the leap to the Animas IR 1250.  Despite the fact that I’m now attached to this pager-sized device by a 21″ tube, I now have a lot more flexibility and freedom to deal with the diabetes.  I’m no longer restricted to carrying around a bottle of insulin in a refridgerated pack (or the alternative, letting my blood glucose get high).

All I have to do is dial in the number of carbs (or choose from a user-customizable food list) and it gives me the appropriate amount of insulin, accounting for my blood glucose level and how much insulin I may still have in my body.

Neat.  Isn’t technology wonderful?  Now, here’s to hoping that this is only a stepping stone to a treatment to cure diabetes in the coming decade.
